Broadband for all? | Whitespace blog
Government plans to boost the digital and communications industries
A government interim report and proposal will be outlined in late spring by Lord Carter, the minister for communications, technology and broadcasting. The Digital Britain report will examine a number of areas and we are particularly interested to see how the government tackle the broadband for all issues. The report is expected to include:
- Universal broadband coverage for all by 2012
- Minimum broadband speeds are expected to be set
- Ways of tackling illegal file-sharing of movies, music and TV
- Proposals on how to protext children who visit social networking sites and playing games
- Regulating the internet to even up the balance with television.
Approximately 60% of british households currently have broadband internet access of varying speeds, and the government wants the rest of the country to get connected. BT currently has a universal service obligation to provide everyone in the country with a telephone line and it is thought that this will look to include broadband.
