Every week we're hearing of agencies going bust or making redundancies. For bigger agencies with more fat to lose, the job losses seem greater while two or three man bands are struggling with cash flow. No one seems surprised.

Design and marketing have always seemed a peripheral concern, something to cut back in times of need or to bring in house. But while you can't deny this is happening, it's not happening everywhere!

Those of us who experienced the last recession in the early 90s will remember a pull back from marketing on a massive scale. But not this time. What we're really seeing is a change in attitude towards marketing spend. Clients are far more savvy these days about the huge investment good design really is. The better agencies have always had a strong strategy bias and communicated with their clients in terms of impact, outcome, audience engagement, conversion and cut through. The best of the newbies are starting out that way too.

In our experience, creative budgets aren't being cut. Clients are questionning the quality of their agencies and the effectiveness of their work and spending with those they feel they can trust. It's a shake out and a raising of standards in our industry, which, having become so oversupplied by every graphics graduate and his laptop in recent years, can only be a good thing.
